Madoff's brother held on fraud charges

Peter Madoff, the younger brother of convicted swindler Bernie Madoff, was taken into custody Friday and is expected to plead guilty to charges related to his brother's massive,?multi-billion dollar?Ponzi scheme.

The arrest, which took place at his lawyer's office in?midtown Manhattan, had been expected. WNBC?said Peter Madoff, 66, was led into a car by two FBI agents. Later Friday, Madoff?is scheduled to appear in the same courthouse where his brother, 74, was convicted and sentenced in March 2009 to 150 years in prison for a crime that stunned the world in the throes of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday revealed in a letter that Peter Madoff had been criminally charged with participating in his brother's fraud. He and his brother are the only?Madoff family members to have been arrested and charged in the Ponzi scheme.

The letter, filed in federal court in Manhattan, said Peter Madoff was expected to plead guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and falsifying records as well as other charges. He agreed not to seek a sentence other than 10 years in prison, the letter said.

Peter Madoff also agreed to forfeit about $143.1 billion, including all real and personal property, the letter said. The amount is symbolic, being more than twice the estimated size of the fraud.

John Wing, a lawyer for Peter Madoff, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Peter Madoff was chief compliance officer at Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC when his brother was arrested on December 11, 2008.

Prosecutors have not said whether criminal cases are also being prepared against Bernard Madoff's son, Andrew, who was co-director of trading, or his niece, Shana, who was a compliance officer at the firm.

In May, Irving Picard, the trustee seeking money for victims of the Ponzi scheme, named members of Madoff's family in an expanded $255.3 million lawsuit, claiming they should have detected Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme at the firm that operated "as if it were their family piggy bank."

Besides Madoff's brother Peter, Picard sued Andrew Madoff, who was co-director of trading; the estate of son Mark, co-director of trading who committed suicide in December 2010; and Shana Madoff.

In the lawsuit, Picard described Peter Madoff as a savvy investor who once served as vice-chairman of the board of governors of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

Picard is seeking $90.4 million from Peter, $81.3 million from Mark Madoff's estate, $73.8 million from Andrew and $15.3 million from Shana.

Lawyers for Andrew and Shana Madoff did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Between 1993 and 2008, Peter Madoff was paid over $36 million in salary and bonuses, Picard said, and the firm funded his lavish lifestyle, including $140,000 for a Ferrari in 1995 and a home on Manhattan's upscale Park Avenue.

Peter Madoff is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and mail fraud as well as making false statements about the firm's compliance program and investment advisory business.

He is also charged with falsifying records.

About a dozen people have now been implicated in criminal wrongdoing related to the Madoff firm.

Five have pleaded not guilty: Annette Bongiorno, Daniel Bonventre, Joann Crupi, Jerome O'Hara and George Perez.

Frank DiPascali, the former chief financial officer often called Bernard Madoff's right-hand man, pleaded guilty in August 2009 and has been praised by prosecutors for his cooperation. He has yet to be sentenced.

Picard has estimated customers of the Madoff firm lost about $20 billion. On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling on the trustee's methods for calculating losses. That decision could help Picard repay customers faster.?

Report: Best Buy founder may seek buyout deal

(AP) ? Best Buy Co. founder Richard Schulze may be considering a bid to take the electronics retailer private, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The report, citing people familiar with Schulze's thinking, sent Best Buy shares higher Tuesday afternoon. The stock closed up 5 percent.

Richard Schulze, 71, founded the company in 1966 and is its largest shareholder by far with a 20 percent stake. The second-largest holder, the mutual fund manager Fidelity Management & Research Co., has 6.9 percent.

Schulze said earlier this month that he was considering options for his stake.

The WSJ report reiterated that Schulze could still sell his stake. But it said his "preference" is to take the company private, although the process of finding potential buyout partners is in the early stages.

Schulze initially announced in May that he would step down on June 21 at the company's annual meeting after an investigation found he knew that the then CEO Brian Dunn was having an inappropriate relationship with a female staffer. At the time he said he would remain as chairman until after the company's annual meeting on June 21 and as a director through the 2013 annual meeting.

However, he resigned abruptly June 7 instead.

"There is an urgent need for Best Buy to reinvigorate growth by reconnecting with today's customers and building pathways to the next generation of consumers," Schulze said in a statement on June 7. "Accordingly, I have shared my views with the Board and today informed them of my decision to resign as chairman and a director, effective immediately, in order to explore all available options for my ownership stake."

Best Buy and a spokesman for Schulze declined to comment.

Shares of Best Buy rose 86 cents, or 4.7 percent, to close at $19.37. The stock slipped 11 cents in after-hours trading. The stock is down about 21 percent since the beginning of the year.

Paraguay's ousted president defiant after 'coup'

ASUNCION, Paraguay - Ousted Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo branded the country's new government illegitimate on Sunday and called for democracy to be restored as neighboring countries intensified criticism of his sudden impeachment.

Lugo, a leftist former Roman Catholic bishop, said his removal from office was "a parliamentary coup against the will of the people" and said he would back any peaceful effort to restore democracy in the South American nation.

Congress voted overwhelmingly on Friday to remove Lugo from office, saying he had failed in his duty to maintain social order following a bloody land eviction.


Under the Paraguayan constitution, the impeached president was replaced by Vice President Federico Franco, a vocal critic of Lugo for much of his presidency.

Franco's newly appointed foreign minister urged Lugo to help quell the regional tensions, saying it was his "duty as a Paraguayan citizen and former president."

Paraguay under pressure from neighbors after Lugo is ousted

But Lugo refused to help his successor.

"We support any kind of peaceful effort aimed at restoring institutional order that was interrupted by Parliament," he told reporters.

"This is a fake government. You can't collaborate with a government that doesn't have legitimacy," he said, adding that he would attend a summit of the regional trade bloc Mercosur later this week to explain the situation.

Argentina, which currently holds Mercosur's rotating presidency, said Franco's government would not be allowed to attend the meeting.

'A pariah'
In a region scarred by military coups and political upheaval in the 1970s and 1980s, the rapid nature of Lugo's impeachment by an opposition-controlled Congress has drawn strong criticism -- especially from fellow leftists.

A senior Brazilian official said Paraguay would likely be suspended from the regional UNASUR grouping and from Mercosur, which also includes Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

"The point is to make this new government a pariah," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Regional powerhouse Brazil has recalled its top diplomat for consultations and the ambassador is unlikely to return while Franco remains in the presidency, the official added.

Oil shipments halted
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Lugo's removal as president was illegal, halted oil shipments to Paraguay and withdrew his ambassador from the country. Argentina's Cristina Fernandez pulled top envoy out on Saturday.

"We don't recognize this government. I've ordered the amassador in Asuncion to pack his things and leave," Chavez said in a speech. "We're going to stop sending oil too."

Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA supplies about a quarter of Paraguay's oil needs under a deal that lets countries buy crude on soft financing terms and even pay in farm goods.

Chavez compared Lugo's removal to the 2009 coup that removed Manuel Zelaya in Honduras.

Nations including Canada, Spain and Germany recognized the new government after Lugo said on Friday he would accept the congressional vote to remove him. Others, including Chile and Colombia on Sunday, have summoned ambassadors for a briefing.

Lugo has suggested that national and international clamor could lead Paraguayan lawmakers to reverse his impeachment.

Despite the chorus of international criticism, Paraguay's low-key riverside capital was calm on Sunday. Fewer police were patrolling the streets than in recent days and restaurants and businesses were open as usual.

"Lugo was useless but what happened in Congress was a joke -- it was like pigs talking about hygiene," said Benjamin Aguayo, 18, in downtown Asuncion.

A small group of Lugo supporters gathered outside the state TV studios to demonstrate in favor of his return to office.

Lugo's impeachment was sparked by clashes that killed six police and 11 peasant farmers during a recent land eviction. He was one year away from completing his five-year term.

Paternity scandals
Paraguay is one of the poorest countries in South America and Lugo, 61, vowed to improve the quality of life of low-income families when his election ended six decades of rule by the conservative Colorado party.

But he struggled to push reforms, including land redistribution to poor peasant farmers, through Congress. A cancer scare and several paternity scandals dating back to his time as a bishop added to his difficulties.

When his allies from the Liberal Party withdrew support for him on Thursday, they cleared the way for the impeachment trial.

In contrast to Lugo, Franco has solid backing among ranchers and farmers in the world's No. 4 soybean exporter.

"The agricultural industry is going to be a priority, no question about it, because it's vital for Paraguay," said Liberal lawmaker Gustavo Cardozo.

Group performs community service while vacationing in Hawai'i

PO'IP? ? Approximately 150 people who won incentive trips to Kaua'i earlier this month wanted to do more than just bask in the sun.

So they signed up for various community service projects around the island, including sprucing up of Po'ip? Beach Park.

The arrangements were made for IHS, a global business information services company that?s headquartered in Denver, Colorado by Chrysalis Events Hawai'i, a destination management company.

?IHS is very focused on corporate sustainability and ?community? is an important part of that priority. We believe that the only way to achieve long-term success for our company is to ensure that the communities where we live, work and play are thriving and vibrant,? said Jane Okun Bomba, senior vice president and chief sustainability, IR and communications officer, IHS. We wanted to ?give back? by contributing effort toward some of the projects that needed to be done. Our goal was to leave the island in a little better shape than when we arrived.?

Every year, IHS rewards its top performing employees and their guests with a week-long stay at a top-notch visitor destination. This year, the company selected Grand Hyatt Kaua'i Resort and Spa.

?This was the first time we participated in community projects during our celebration trip,? said Okun Bomba. ?Many of our employees were so energized by the opportunity to do some meaningful work and engage with the wonderful people in your community. IHS would like to thank the people of Kaua'i for welcoming us so warmly.?

The IHS team that freshened up Po'ip? Beach Park was provided with paint, rollers and brushes through the county?s Adopt-A-Park Program. It took the team about two hours to paint all of the picnic tables, perform minor repairs and pick up trash.

?We really appreciate the work that was done by the IHS employees at Po'ip? Beach Park,? said Lenny Rapozo, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. ?It?s not every day that we meet people who come to Hawai'i for a vacation and volunteer to do community projects during their visit.?

In addition to Po'ip? Beach Park, IHS teams participated in community projects at Kawaikini Charter School, Makauwahi Cave Reserve, National Tropical Botanical Garden and Kilohana Plantation.?

Eddie Sarita, coordinator of the county?s Adopt-A-Park Program and manager of the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall, noted that anyone who signs up as a volunteer in the Adopt-A-Park program can choose how he or she would like to help. He said that training on how to perform a particular task is also available to volunteers.

?Volunteers can help in a lot of different ways,? said Sarita. ?They can pick up litter, remove graffiti, sweep the courts and pathways, pull weeds, rake leaves, plant flowers or engage in approved projects.?

An entire park or particular areas within parks may be adopted including: sports fields; exercise courses; flower beds; trees and shrubs; pavilions; playgrounds; basketball and tennis courts; bike and pedestrian paths; undeveloped parkland; and restrooms.

Over the years, many local community groups have also engaged in beautification projects at county parks.

Bringing down the cost of microbial fuel cells

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? Engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) have identified a catalyst that provides the same level of efficiency in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as the currently used platinum catalyst, but at 5% of the cost.

Since more than 60% of the investment in making microbial fuel cells is the cost of platinum, the discovery may lead to much more affordable energy conversion and storage devices.

The material -- nitrogen-enriched iron-carbon nanorods -- also has the potential to replace the platinum catalyst used in hydrogen-producing microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), which use organic matter to generate a possible alternative to fossil fuels.

"Fuel cells are capable of directly converting fuel into electricity," says UWM Professor Junhong Chen, who created the nanorods and is testing them with Assistant Professor Zhen (Jason) He. "With fuel cells, electrical power from renewable energy sources can be delivered where and when required, cleanly, efficiently and sustainably."

The scientists also found that the nanorod catalyst outperformed a graphene-based alternative being developed elsewhere. In fact, the pair tested the material against two other contenders to replace platinum and found the nanorods' performance consistently superior over a six-month period.

The nanorods have been proved stable and are scalable, says Chen, but more investigation is needed to determine how easily they can be mass-produced. More study is also required to determine the exact interaction responsible for the nanorods' performance.

The work was published in March in the journal Advanced Materials.

The right recipe

MFCs generate electricity while removing organic contaminants from wastewater. On the anode electrode of an MFC, colonies of bacteria feed on organic matter, releasing electrons that create a current as they break down the waste.

On the cathode side, the most important reaction in MFCs is the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Platinum speeds this slow reaction, increasing efficiency of the cell, but it is expensive.

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are related to MFCs. However, instead of electricity, MECs produce hydrogen. In addition to harnessing microorganisms at the anode, MECS also use decomposition of organic matter and platinum in a catalytic process at their cathodes.

Chen and He's nanorods incorporate the best characteristics of other reactive materials, with nitrogen attached to the surface of the carbon rod and a core of iron carbide. Nitrogen's effectiveness at improving the carbon catalyst is already well known. Iron carbide, also known for its catalytic capabilities, interacts with the carbon on the rod surface, providing "communication" with the core. Also, the material's unique structure is optimal for electron transport, which is necessary for ORR.

When the nanorods were tested for potential use in MECs, the material did a better job than the graphene-based catalyst material, but it was still not as efficient as platinum.

"But it shows that there could be more diverse applications for this material, compared to graphene," says He. "And it gave us clues for why the nanorods performed differently in MECs."

Research with MECs was published in June in the journal Nano Energy.

A romp in the rain for Rupp at Olympic trials

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Galen Rupp grew up in Oregon, so when he sees rain falling the way it did on the first day of Olympic trials, he sees an opportunity, not a roadblock.

No wonder, then, that with rain pounding the track, Rupp was at his best. Running the 10,000 meters in a downpour Friday, Rupp still set a trials record, finishing in 27 minutes, 25.33 seconds.

Next, he'll be off to another place where they know a little about rainy days ? London ? for a trip to his second Olympics.

"I wasn't worried about it at all," said Rupp, who often has to wear a mask when he runs to keep his allergies from acting up. "I'm from Oregon. I love running in this weather. It's good for my allergies. I was excited to see it was really raining."

His was the most impressive performance on opening day in rainy Eugene, save possibly for the effort decathlete Ashton Eaton put in. With Bruce Jenner watching from the stands, Eaton made it through the first five events on pace to break a 20-year-old American record held by Dan O'Brien.

Later, in the women's 10K, Amy Hastings won in 31 minutes, 58.36 seconds to get the Olympic spot denied her when she finished fourth by 1:11 at the marathon trials earlier this year in Houston.

"Coming across the finish line today, it was night and day different," Hastings said. "It was heartbreaking in Houston. I can't even believe it right now."

While the long-distance runners and decathletes were grinding, the sprinters used Day 1 to warm up ? not a bad idea considering the wet chill that gripped Hayward Field all day long, leaving puddles on the track and turning parts of the infield mushy.

Sanya Richards-Ross, LaShawn Merritt, Allyson Felix and Carmelita Jeter all made it through their opening heats with minimal problems.

"Other than it messing up my hair, it's OK," Richards-Ross said after running her first 400-meter qualifier in 51.69 seconds.

Merritt, the defending Olympic champion at 400 meters, took to the rain-slickened track, sidestepped a runner who slipped and fell in the lane next to him and finished in 45.36 seconds, the best time in the men's heats.

"I saw him and I had to do a little step more toward the inside of my lane, where I should've been in the first place," Merritt said.

Jeremy Wariner, the 2004 Olympic champion, also advanced to the semifinals, though his race wasn't quite such a breeze. He finished third in his heat in a time of 45.84.

"Just clearing the cobwebs out," Wariner said. "I worked my turn pretty well. I saved a lot for the homestretch."

David Neville, the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, finished last in his heat and won't go to London unless he is chosen for the relay team.

The 400 runners have semifinals Saturday, with finals scheduled for Sunday.

In the women's 100, Felix and Jeter each won their heats easily.

"It was OK. Just wanted to make it safely to the next round," said Felix, who is using the 100 to stay sharp for her main event, the 200. "I feel like tomorrow will be better. Always good to get that first one out of the way."

In the women's 100 hurdles, Dawn Harper, the defending Olympic champion, won her heat in 12.79 seconds ? a victory she earned even though she didn't have the ideal, track-grabbing spikes in her shoes.

"I actually change spikes" when it rains, she said. "Usually, the pointier ones grab the track. It was on my mind out there because I had the older ones in."

Lolo Jones also qualified but not by much. She finished third in her heat for the last automatic qualifying spot after running 13.01. Her race was delayed when Shericka Ward false started.

"I felt really good, but it was a bad race," Jones said. "After the false start, I just relaxed a little bit too much."

Meet organizers scrubbed women's pole vault preliminaries, meaning all 29 athletes, including 2008 Olympic silver medalist Jenn Suhr, will move to finals Sunday.

In the decathlon, Eaton was ahead of a world-record pace for two events. His shot put throw of 46 feet, 7 3/4 inches slowed him down, but he still ended the day with 4,728 points ? 322 ahead of Trey Hardee and 17 ahead of the pace O'Brien was on when he set the American record in 1992.

"This is the culmination of a lot of hard work my team has put in," Eaton said.

Eaton, an Oregon native, also closed the day by running in the pouring rain, finishing the 400 meters in 46.70 seconds. He looked very much at home.

As did Rupp, who will be joined on the 10K team by Matt Tegenkamp (27:33.94) and Dathan Ritzenhein (27:36.09).

After many months filled with injuries and the heartbreak of missing the marathon team by 8 seconds, Ritzenhein needed to beat the 'A' standard of 27:45 to qualify in the 10K. He did and made his third Olympics.

"It's been a rough road," he said. "The last few years have been very difficult, for sure."

So while he celebrates a spot in the Olympics, most of the rest were simply glad to still be in the hunt ? advancing on a slip-and-slide kind of day, knowing that under U.S. rules, the top three qualify ? no excuses or second chances, no matter the conditions.

"You have to adapt to what the weather is, how the track is," Merritt said. "Know what you're doing before you get out there. You know the weather, the wind, and the track is slippery. It's all about going in with a plan and executing."

Senate bill brings some big changes to farm policy

(AP) ? Briefly putting election-year politics aside, the Senate on Thursday moved toward strong approval of legislation assuring that farmers hit by bad times will be protected and that millions of others hurt by the bad economy won't go hungry.

The Senate is expected to show bipartisan support for the $500 billion bill that sets farm safety net and conservation policies and funds the food stamp program over the next five years. The vote will come after lawmakers finish the final 10 of more than 70 amendments the Senate is considering as part of the 1,000-page bill.

The bill goes next to the House, where there's less enthusiasm for it among conservative Republicans. The House Agriculture Committee has delayed a vote on the farm bill until July 11, and it's uncertain when the full House will vote. The 2008 farm bill expires at the end of September.

One issue the Senate left unresolved that the House will have to consider is a division between northern and southern farmers over safety nets.

The Senate bill makes major changes in past practices, eliminating direct payments to farmers regardless of whether they plant a crop and replacing the payments with greater emphasis on crop insurance and a new revenue protection plan that compensates farmers for minor losses until crop insurance kicks in.

Northern and Midwestern corn and soybean farmers support the change, but southern rice and peanut farmers, who have relied more heavily on direct payments and a target price subsidy that would also be eliminated, are looking to the House to keep at least some parts of the old system.

Senate supporters say the changes to the subsidy programs will save $15 billion over the next 10 years. The entire bill, with savings to conservation programs and food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, would save the treasury $23 billion over that period.

The Senate bill also limits subsidy payments to those with adjusted gross income of less than $750,000, half the current ceiling, and caps payments at $50,000 for an individual or $100,000 for a couple. An amendment approved Wednesday would also reduce by 15 percentage points the taxpayer share of crop insurance premiums for those with incomes of more than $750,000. The government now pays an average 62 percent of crop insurance premiums.

The bill also ends payments to "farm managers," sometimes wealthy people who may have an interest in a farm but don't live on the property or actively engage in farming.

Food stamps continue to command the great majority of farm bill dollars. Spurred by the bad economy, there are now 46 million people getting food stamps, at a cost of about $80 billion a year. That's 80 percent of the entire farm bill budget.

The farm bill does make an effort to end abuse or misuse of SNAP benefits. Lottery winners and college students being supported by their non-low-income families no longer qualify. The bill cracks down on benefit trafficking, prevents liquor and tobacco stores from accepting food stamps and closes a loophole in which some states give as little as $1 a year in heating assistance to people, even when they don't have heating bills, to increase their food stamp benefits. That saves about $4 billion over 10 years, a tiny part of the $770 billion the program is expected to spend, and senators rejected amendments that would have made deeper cuts in the program.

The measure also differs from past farm bills in paying more attention to what are called specialty crops, mainly fruits and vegetables. It expands block grants to states to support research and promotion of specialty crops, assists organic farmers and expands support for farmers' markets and programs that help get healthy foods to low-income areas.

Still, there are numerous groups that say the bill doesn't go far enough in casting off old farm bill habits. The conservative Club for Growth said it still asserts too much government control in the private sector. The public interest advocacy group U.S. PIRG said the bill "will continue the current practice of disproportionately subsidizing the largest agribusinesses, who are already profitable and don't need taxpayer handouts."

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., long a watchdog for special interest projects included in highway and farm bills, noted that the bill doesn't change the program that protects sugar growers from foreign competition and creates a new $3 billion program for cotton growers. He said there is also money in the bill to improve the U.S. sheep industry, study the health benefits of peas and lentils and plant trees in urban parks.

Tigers Beat Cardinals 2-1 Win With Quintin Berry's Tiebreaking Hit In The 10th Inning

DETROIT -- Quintin Berry slapped a base hit through the drawn-in infield, then took off for first base. He raised both hands in the air in celebration, rounded the bag and ripped off his helmet.

"I've never had a walk-off before," the Detroit outfielder said. "I showed it out there, jumping around, acting crazy. You don't know what to do with yourself."

Berry's tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning gave the Tigers a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. It was another bright moment for the 27-year-old rookie, who is hitting .315 on the year.

Detroit also got an encouraging performance from another youngster. Jacob Turner allowed a run and four hits in five innings in his first start of the season.

"He did fine. I will say this: He's much improved," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "There's no question about that. He's much improved from the last time I saw him, particularly at the big league level."

Prince Fielder homered for the Tigers.

Ramon Santiago and Jhonny Peralta started the winning rally with one-out singles off Victor Marte (0-1), who then grazed Austin Jackson's jersey with a pitch. Berry followed with a grounder up the middle to end it, and the Tigers poured onto the field to mob him.

"They gave me a good shot, but it's the best feeling you could get, being ripped up a little bit," Berry said. "I'll let them do it every day."

Joaquin Benoit (1-1) got the win.

Kyle Lohse allowed a run and four hits in seven innings for the Cardinals.

The 21-year-old Turner was recalled from Triple-A Toledo before the game. Left-hander Drew Smyly has been out because of a blister on his left middle finger.

Turner kept the Tigers in the game while their offense struggled. He walked five ? one intentionally ? and struck out three.

Fielder put Detroit in front with a 425-foot homer in the fourth. The slugging first baseman flipped his bat forward after making contact with his huge uppercut swing, and there was no doubt about his 11th homer of the year.

"I was going to bounce a breaking ball," Lohse said. "Unfortunately, I missed bouncing it by about four feet and Prince killed it."

The lead didn't last long. With one out and men on second and third in the fifth, Matt Holliday lifted a foul fly that Detroit right fielder Don Kelly caught while almost falling into the seats. The tying run came home on the play, but after an intentional walk to Carlos Beltran, Turner got out of the inning on a flyout by Allen Craig.

Kelly appeared OK after his catch but eventually left in the eighth with a left knee contusion. He is day to day.

Turner, a first-round draft pick in 2009, posted an 8.53 ERA in three starts last year. He was named Detroit's top prospect by Baseball America earlier this year, and he acquitted himself fine in his return to the big leagues ? against his hometown team, too.

Turner grew up about 25 miles outside St. Louis, and current Cardinals manager Mike Matheny actually helped mentor him in high school.

"My parents came up for the game," Turner said. "I grew up rooting for the Cardinals, so it's kind of surreal to pitch against them."

After Turner departed, Octavio Dotel, Phil Coke, Brayan Villarreal and Benoit pitched the next five innings, holding the Cardinals to two hits and striking out six.

The Tigers are without closer Jose Valverde, who has an injured right wrist.

Daniel Descalso hit a leadoff double against Coke in the seventh, but the Cardinals couldn't get him home.

Detroit intentionally walked Beltran with first base open again in the 10th, and again the move worked. Craig popped out with men on first and second to end the threat.

Tigers catcher Alex Avila had a single in his return from a right hamstring injury.

Savile Row tailors open doors into exclusive world

LONDON (Reuters) - Michael Skinner and a tiny coterie of colleagues are intimately familiar with the physical details of rock stars, royalty and some of Britain's most famous historical figures.

But don't expect him to start dishing out the gossip, because absolute discretion is a professional hallmark of the tailors on Savile Row in London, whose customers over some two centuries of service stretch from famed military hero Horatio Nelson to Michael Jackson and Britain's Prince William.

The now master cutter at Dege & Skinner collected one of his most favorite anecdotes at the tender age of 18, when he was given the task of dressing then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill for Queen Elizabeth's 1953 coronation.

"It was an amazing thing...being at Westminster Abbey and actually having to dress the great man," Skinner told Reuters on a visit to the Row in honor of London's first ever standalone event for men's fashion over the weekend.

Skinner has spent a lifetime on Savile Row, a street known around the world for the bespoke clothing made by a handful of traditional firms such as Dege & Skinner, Gieves & Hawkes, H. Huntsman & Sons and Henry Poole & Co as well as modern designers like Ozwald Boateng and E. Tautz.

The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Queen Elizabeth as well as Admiral Horatio Nelson and the man who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington, have all had clothes, robes, suits and military uniforms from the tailors gathered here.

Skinner who runs one of the last remaining family-owned businesses left on Savile Row with his son William, opened their showrooms and workshops to the public as part of last weekend's first London Collections Men fashion event.

"We're not a sort of hocus pocus bunch of people behind frosted windows. We're actually pretty decent people who do a pretty decent job doing our damnedest to make really nice clothes and that's what gives us the buzz," Skinner said.

"It is exciting to be part of the fashion week and to showcase Savile Row and what we do as a trade in terms of the craft industry, making clothes in the time-honored fashion for the individual," William Skinner said.

Two-piece suits from the country's top craftsmen in men's clothing start from 3,000 pounds ($4,719), but customers who may be daunted by the eye-watering prices for bespoke clothing from a Savile Row tailor have some options.

Dege & Skinner provides many alternative methods of payment to encourage people to buy on Savile Row, added Michael Skinner.

"We've always had a policy of doing everything we can to help each individual and we have means of extending credit, we have ways of paying by bank order, special offers for young officers in the forces to buy civilian clothes which we've now extended to young people for their first suit."

His father William said that one of the selling points of Savile Row is that its tailors offer clothes that are timeless, because they are made just for you.

"When you're spending the money that people do on our clothes, then you don't want it to fall out of fashion in six months time, you want something special. And that's why they come to us," he said.

Gieves & Hawkes Bespoke Cutter Richard Lawson's workshop displays an impressive collection of brown paper patterns, each containing the specific measurements of customers.

The company's archive includes pieces created for Nelson, who settled his tailoring bill just before he was killed at the naval Battle of Trafalgar as well as Waterloo victor Wellington. The firm is famous for its military tailoring services to the British Army and the Royal Navy.

A heavily embroidered black and gold jacket for late singer Michael Jackson on display in the company's showroom cost ?20,000 ($31,330) alone to make.

Lawson, who has worked on the Row for nearly five years, said the greatest joy he gets out of his job is when the suit he has made for his customer fits perfectly.

"When you put it on the chap's shoulders and literally, it just slots on like that and the customer straight away starts feeling like he's wearing it, you cannot replace that feeling," he told Reuters.

"It makes up for all the other stresses that go on when things don't go quite as smoothly or things are going wrong. It's a great part of the job."

Getting an apprenticeship on London's most exclusive street for tailoring is competitive as there is a lot of interest in joining the trade, said Lawson.

"A lot of it is do with the luck of being in the right place at the right time when that apprenticeship position comes up and Savile Row has a real buzz about it now," Lawson said.

"It's a beautiful little community, we all work on the same row, we know each other, and as I say, once you're on the inside, it's a real family atmosphere we have."
