Data-hungry crowds spoil Olympic TV coverage, archers alerted

With an opening ceremony celebrating social media and a guest appearance by the father of the world wide web, you would think the games are pretty Twitter-friendly. Well, not so much, as the hordes of London have been told to keep non-urgent texts and tweets to themselves to avoid disrupting TV coverage for those who weren't lucky enough to score beach volleyball tickets. The recommendation comes after broadcasters bumbled through the men's cycling road race due to a lack of available data from the cyclists' GPS. The information bottleneck appears to be related to one specific network and sharing the data burden has been discussed, although probably not via Twitter. The IOC knows that telling the masses not to log on likely won't have any impact -- so, what's next for the data haters.

Chinese outward investment and forest resources

By?Bob Flynn, Director, International Timber, RISI

SEATTLE, WA, July 30, 2012 (RISI) - I recently participated as the sole forest products sector representative at an event organized by Euromoney in Beijing, the "China-Canada Investors Forum." Not surprisingly, almost all the attention was fixed on the energy and mining sectors, despite the fact that in 2011 the largest category of exports from Canada to China was wood pulp. Wood products (primarily lumber, but also a considerable quantity of logs) was either the second or third largest export category to China, depending on how you lump various ore exports. In total, forest products accounted for 24% of all Canadian exports to China in 2011. Canada has been China's largest supplier of wood pulp for a number of years. It is also China's largest supplier of softwood lumber (accounting for 47% of imports in 2012 through May) and the fourth largest supplier of softwood logs (about 10% in 2012). Canada's lumber exports to China increased at an amazing compound annual rate of 83% between 2006 and 2011, and even in the relatively weak construction markets in China in 2012, imports of both logs and lumber from Canada have increased through the end of May (by 15% and 9%, respectively, compared with the first five months of 2011).

Despite the large flow of timber and wood products from Canada to China, other than my comments during the "natural resources" discussion panel, the only mention of the forest sector in Canada at this meeting was by He Zhenwei, Vice Secretary General of the China Industrial Overseas Development and Planning Association. Mr. He mentioned that one problem Chinese companies face in investing overseas is politically motivated opposition, and an example he gave was when CITIC (Chinese International Trust and Investment Corporation) invested in the Celgar pulp mill in British Columbia. According to Mr. He, CITIC was led to believe that the company had a stable wood supply, but NGO opposition to timber harvesting was so fierce that eventually the project "failed." This was a lesson, warned Mr. He, that Chinese companies need to be very careful, and that environmental concerns like this case in Canada could ruin an investment project if not properly understood.

I was a bit stunned by Mr. He's reference, because it seemed to me like ancient history. CITIC invested in the Celgar mill in (I believe) 1987, which was a time when the forest industry in western Canada (and the US Pacific Northwest) was facing growing opposition from environmental groups over timber harvesting practices. However, when Stone Container pushed the company into bankruptcy protection in 1998, it blamed "poor market conditions," which made it unable to service its heavy debt obligations (no doubt exacerbated by the $800 million renovation of the mill completed in 1993).

But regardless of the reasons that CITIC's investment in the Celgar mill was unsuccessful1, Mr. He's comments bring to mind a couple of points about China's growing wave of outward foreign investment2. The first, obviously, is that the Chinese have long memories, and past failures can color investor's perceptions for a very long time. But the second point is that it's interesting that Mr. He chose to focus on an environmental matter. China's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) emphasized support for the "green economy," and there has been an increasing focus by Chinese authorities (and many public pronouncements) on the need to pay attention to "sustainability" and taking care of the environment. As China's outward foreign direct investment has accelerated rapidly in the past several years (see below), a major focus has been on securing raw materials, including forests. But to date, the only document that the State Forest Administration in China has released regarding overseas investment in forestry is the 2009 "A Guide on Sustainable Management and Utilization of Overseas Forest by Chinese Enterprises." This document, which seems to use the word "sustainable" in every paragraph, stresses that "Chinese enterprises shall contribute to sustainable development of local forests, and safeguard local ecological and environmental security while managing and utilizing the forest resources in foreign countries." Whatever one thinks about the sincerity of the Chinese government's commitment to protecting the environment, it is obvious that much more attention is being paid to this theme than in the past and projects targeting investment from Chinese organizations should keep this in mind.

Taiwan university sues Apple over iPhone patents

AFP - Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University has filed a suit against US tech giant Apple, claiming the company's Siri intelligent assistant has infringed on two of its patents.

Apple introduced the voice-activated assistant technology when launching the iPhone 4S in 2011.

But Cheng Kung University in south Taiwan's Tainan city said the technology infringes two patents held by one of its research teams, both related to speech recognition.

The team is led by Wang Jhing-fa, a professor who specialises in chip designs and neural networks facilitating speech and pattern recognition.

"We filed a lawsuit against Apple at a Federal district court in Texas Friday," Yama Chen, a legal affairs manager at the university, told AFP.

Apple Taiwan was not immediately available for comment.

Earlier this month, Chinese technology firm Shanghai Zhizhen Network Technology Co Ltd filed a similar claim against Apple over Siri.

The company's Xiao i Robot software, patented in 2004, operates in a similar way to Apple's personal assistant and works on the iOS and Android operating systems.

Greater China -- which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan -- has become Apple's fastest-growing region, with revenues second only to the United States.

Western Wind Energy: A Matter of Trust, and Value

Tom Konrad CFA

Yesterday, I wrote about Western Wind Energy?s (TSXV:WND, OTC:WNDEF) plans to increase the 1603 cash grant for their Windstar wind farm. ?But that was not the only thing discussed in Monday?s conference call.

Investor?Frustration

During the Q&A, many investors were concerned about Western Wind?s recent deal to acquire a 4 GW wind development pipeline from?Champlin/GEI Wind Holdings. ?

The concern was that the company would be issuing 8 million shares for the assets, but the company has revealed very little about the projects. ?With the federal Production Tax Credit (PTC) set to expire at the end of 2012, many development projects will not be viable. ?In the absence of more information, the entire four gigawatts of potential could effectively be worthless.

On the other hand, the loss of the PTC?doubtlessly?affected the price paid for the assets. ?Champlin/GEI had invested ?almost $20 million? in the pipeline so far, and Western Wind is acquiring the pipeline for 8 million shares, at a?notional?value of $2.50 per share ($20 million.) ?At the current market price of only $1.25 a share, that?s $12.5 million, but if we consider Western Wind?s net asset value per share, which I put at over $5 per share, then the company is paying over $40 million for the assets.

What is the development pipeline worth? ?I think it?s safe to assume that most of the 4,000 MW of projects will not be built without the PTC. ?But the company has spoken of a near term project 75 MW project Hawaii, which they say is viable without the PTC. ?Given that Hawaii has?extremely?high?electricity?prices (most electricity is generated from oil) and an aggressive renewable energy mandate, it?s quite believable that a project in Hawaii would be economical without the PTC, despite the high cost of building anything in Hawaii.

The company has also claims that other projects in the pipeline will be viable without the PTC, but has given few details.

?Trust Me?

In response to investor?s questions during the conference call, President and CEO?Jeff Ciachurski was not particularly forthcoming. ?He says he cannot reveal more details about the projects in the pipeline because it would provide ammunition to opponents who want to reduce the price paid for wind power in the power purchase agreements he negotiates with utilities. ?Like investors? concerns about lack of transparency,?Ciachurski?s worries are valid. ?If the company tells investors it will receive a high rate of return on a project, utility customers will use that statement in front of regulators to try to reduce the amount the utility pays the company for?electricity. ?In other words, information is a two-edged sword.

From his tone in conference calls, Ciachurski seems offended by the implication that the Champlin/GEI deal will not be a good one for investors. ?He asks us to consider his track record, management?s ability to grow its assets and projects. ?The value of Western Wind?s projects has been validated in two ways: by the in-depth due diligence of the leading banks among the project lenders, and by the independent valuation the company commissioned last year, on which I based my $5 to $6 valuation of the stock.

Western Wind?s 2004 annual report shows only $200 thousand in liabilities on the balance sheet. ?On March 31, 2012, the most recent quarterly report shows $360 million in?liabilities. ? Over those seven years, the amount of money banks were willing to lend grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 187%. ?The book value of assets on the balance sheet also grew, from $3.3 million to almost $400 million, a 93% CAGR, although this greatly understates the growth in the value of Western Wind?s assets, since they are shown on the balance sheet at cost, not on a discounted cash flow basis.

The company has issued shares to fund some of this growth: shares outstanding rose six-fold, a CAGR of 27%, but not in a?dilutive?way. ?Even using just the balance sheet values of net assets, net assets per share grew from $0.29 to $1.85 (after the receipt of the reduced cash grant), or over 30% CAGR.

Given that track record, I?m willing to give?Ciachurski and his team the benefit of the doubt on the Champlin/GEI pipeline. ?I agree that?Western?Wind could reveal more about their pipeline than they are without tipping their hand in PPA negotiations, such as a list of projects giving their locations, potential megawatts, wind regime, and a rough idea of how much progress has been made on them.

In short, ?I don?t like the secrecy, but?I?m willing to put up with it because I?m able to buy Western Wind shares at a tiny fraction of what I see as their true value.

Rumors

There are some who say any trust in?Ciachurski is misplaced. ?I?ve received comments on my articles saying that ??the executives have been plundering the company for years with impunity,? but if?such?plundering occurred on any large scale, we would not have seen the asset growth discussed above. ?I was also contacted by a Vancouver-based private investigator, who claimed to be working for a group of investors who had been swindled by Ciachurski. ?He asked me to publish his research linking?Ciachurski to convicted felons. ?But he was unable to substantiate the linkage, other than to repeat hearsay from unidentified individuals.

The company says such allegations are the work of a group of Vancouver based hedge funds, who have been buying the stock near current prices ($1.25 a share) and want to sell the company to a buyer like Algonquin Power (TSX:AQN, OTC:AQUNF), which made and offer of $2.50 a share last October. ?Even if the unsubstantiated allegations about?Ciachurski ?plundering the company? were true, the plundering has been minimal, since shareholder value has increased substantially during the ?supposed plundering. ?That?s hardly typical of a company with unscrupulous management: Shareholder value in such companies almost always goes down, not up. ?We only have to look to wind turbine and solar?manufacturers?to see many examples of honestly run renewable energy companies with rapidly dropping shareholder value.

Although I?m not averse to a quick profit (most of my stake, like that of the Vancouver hedge funds, was acquired around the current price), I agree with?Ciachurski that the best time to sell Western Wind will be after the company?s recently completed projects have been producing cash for a few quarters, and the Yabucoa solar project in Puerto Rico is complete. ?The company expects that each of the next seven quarters will be record quarters for revenue and earnings, and they can say this with a good degree of confidence. ?The revenue in question depends only on the wind blowing, the sun shining, and utilities with good credit ratings paying for the power generated.

At $1.25 a share, I don?t see much downside. ?If the Vancouver funds manage to force an immediate sale, I get a quick 2x profit. ?If?Ciachurski gets his hoped for sale in 2014, I get a 4x or even 8x profit after only a couple years. ?That seems worth the wait.

From a Wolverine: The Case for College Sports

Taylor Branch delivered the roundhouse punch to the NCAA and its hypocrisy/standards last year in our pages. Louis Freeh et al delivered a damning judgment on Joe Paterno's Penn State earlier this week. Yesterday I quoted a Harvard graduate on the Ivy League's problems in the same regard.

A reader writes in to make the contrary case, on the character-building traits of college sports etc. I can imagine the followup arguments pro and con and won't keep this going indefinitely, but in fairness here is the other side.

Wolverine.jpgAfter reading the note from your Harvard alum, I felt it's important to ask what the value of higher education is? I'm an alum of Michigan-a very good school with a very good football program. In 1997, we won a national championship in football, and had the Heisman Trophy winner. Obviously many of the members of that team went on to have long, successful NFL careers. But what of the majority of the players who ended up not going on to the NFL?

It's only one year from one school (and after Penn State, I hesitate to point our it's known for doing things "the right way,") but the vast majority of those players have gone on to successful careers. Many of them owned their own businesses. All had jobs. I'll try to find the link on MGoBlog tomorrow*, but a Michigan blogger caught up with those players around 2007 and found out that they were all doing all right - more than all right, actually.

Yale Football 1879 2.jpgNow again, this is a small sample size - but usually folks who deride the term "student athlete" use anecdotal evidence, as does your Harvard alum. A sample size of one is stronger than that. And again, Michigan is known for doing things "right," and is also a good academic school with a strong football program. But then, so are Texas, USC, Georgia Tech, Stanford and Notre Dame.

In this country, as in most of the world, universities are used to turn boys and girls into future leaders. They evaluate their recruits mostly by grade point averages and standardized tests, the latter of which many educators feel is a poor way to measure their students. A minority are let in with lower GPAs because they demonstrate excellence in another realm - arts, music, and yes, sports.

And what's wrong with that? What's wrong with opening up opportunities to kids who wouldn't otherwise have them because they demonstrate excellence differently than the traditional way? Maybe it's because Harvard, and Michigan, do actually give a damn at giving these kids a chance, both on the field and in the classroom? After all, Michael Oher [from Michael Lewis's The Blind Side] ended up as a valedictorian in his class, after barely qualifying for school in the first place.

In another country, these same kids would get stuck in some "minor leagues" for a few years before finding out that they weren't going to ever cut it in the big leagues. And then they have to decide what's next. Here? They go to college, get an education while playing ball, learn more about teamwork, leadership, and dealing with success and failure. And then they get a degree and decide what to do next. I imagine the reason they recruit those non-revenue sports in schools like Harvard is to give excellence an opportunity to develop in the collegiate environment. And they teach them to become future leaders, in and off the field.

Isn't that the point of an education?

Hail! To the Victors, Valiant!

(AP Photo/Laurent Cipriani)

(AP) ? Bradley Wiggins doesn't think the Tour de France needs a "boss" of the pack. At least not him. He says riders are equal and he's too reclusive.

But the 32-year-old Briton is taking charge at cycling's greatest race and showed leadership on Saturday with a bold if unsuccessful effort to help a teammate win Stage 13 ? instead won by Germany's Andre Greipel.

Wiggins finished the windy and flat 217-kilometer (134.8-mile) ride from Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux to Le Cap d'Agde on the Mediterranean with his top rivals to retain the yellow jersey for a seventh straight day.

Greipel, who turns 30 on Monday, earned his third stage victory this Tour ? a photo finish showed he won by half a wheel's length ahead of Slovakian rider Peter Sagan. Edvald Boasson Hagen of Norway was third.

Just seconds earlier, Wiggins, with Sky teammate Boasson Hagen on his back wheel, led a speeding bunch of riders around a sharp final bend to overtake two breakaway riders, hoping to set up the Norwegian for a win.

Instead, a crafty Greipel ? seeing the Wiggins setup in the works ? held close to Boasson Hagen, and then outsprinted him in the final few-hundred yards to the line.

In Tour lore, such bold displays are unusual from the bearer of the yellow jersey. Wiggins had his reasons: It's safer to stay in front of possible trouble in the frenzied pack, and he owed one to Boasson Hagen.

"I tried to repay Edvald in some way, because he's been solid this Tour for me ? and all season," said Wiggins, noting that the Norwegian had been there to escort him in the Alps earlier this week.

Cycling experts have pointed to riders over the years who have dominated the pack, or peloton, with attributes of teamwork, willpower and race mastery, among others ? earning them the "boss" moniker.

The most recent examples are Lance Armstrong, the retired seven-time champion, and two-time Tour winner Alberto Contador of Spain ? who is still competing but is missing the Tour over a doping ban linked to the 2010 race.

Many believe that Wiggins is well-positioned to become the first Briton to take home the yellow jersey after the Tour ends on July 22. But he says it's not his style to be the dominant force in the pack.

"I don't think it's important for the peloton to have a boss, 'cause I think we should all have our own voice, and I've never thought that anybody should be above anybody else," he said. "At the end of the day, we're all equals. I think in the past, when there have been bosses and that, it's more through fear than respect ? it's certainly something that I have sensed, anyway."

For Wiggins, it may be just a question of personality.

"In terms of being a boss, it's not something I'm going to stand in front" to do, he said. "I'm a bit too much of a recluse for that."

Wiggins also spoke Saturday about the "respect" fellow riders have for the yellow jersey bearer. After Italy's Vincenzo Nibali took badly to a seeming glare from Wiggins at the finish of Stage 10. The next day, the Briton patched things up, with a pat on Nibali's back after a punishing day in the Alps.

Wiggins earned more respect Saturday.

"I was impressed by the way Bradley worked for Boasson Hagen in the stage finale, especially with the sharp curve towards the end," said Nibali, seen as a top contender for the yellow jersey.

But Wiggins ran afoul of Spain's Luis Leon Sanchez ? one of the two breakaway riders Wiggins helped the pack overtake ? and made an angry gesture at the Briton as he passed by. Sanchez explained that he felt Sky was being too dominant, and he didn't understand why Wiggins was working to help a teammate to win a stage while in yellow.

"It's unfortunate. I can't look after everyone in the peloton," said Wiggins, adding that he does "love" Sanchez as a person. "It's a shame he feels like that."

Afterward, Sanchez had second thoughts about his initial reaction, writing on Twitter, "I beg (at)bradwiggins' pardon. He is the leader of the race so he and his team have the right to do whatever they want."

After the 13th stage, the top standings didn't change: Wiggins leads second-place Sky teammate ? and fellow Briton ? Christopher Froome by 2 minutes, 5 seconds. Nibali is third, 2:23 back, and defending champion Cadel Evans of Australia is 3:19 back in fourth.

Some race watchers say Wiggins should keep on good terms with his own teammate, Froome, who won on an uphill finish in Stage 7, and finished second to Wiggins in a time-trial into Besancon two days later.

"The most important thing for Sky is that those two guys remain friends until the end," said Saxo Bank team manager Bjarne Riis. "But I can't answer whether it will be the case or not."

Said Stefano Zanatta, sports director of Nibali's Liquigas team: "If Wiggins and Froome don't get along well together, we'll try to make the most of it."

Wiggins, too, senses speculation about a possible conflict of interest, even if Froome has publicly expressed support for his Sky leader. Asked whether he considered Froome an opponent, Wiggins replied with a chuckle: "Well, he is a teammate."

Saturday's route was known as a transitional stage because it was mostly flat, and guided riders away from their last big test ? the Alps ? and toward their next, the Pyrenees.

As the riders neared the coast, the stage's big challenges arrived: A steep if short climb in the port town of Sete, and a windy ride between the Mediterranean and the Bassin de Thau, known for its oyster farms.

Riders swung their bikes left to right as if in slow motion as they hit the Mont Saint-Clair climb in Sete, a mid-grade ascent over 1.6 kilometers ? but with an average gradient of 10.2 percent.

That split the pack into several groups with Greipel, Wiggins, Nibali among the first 43 riders to finish. Some sprinters, like Mark Cavendish of Britain and Matt Goss of Australia, were dropped on the Mont Saint-Clair and came across more than 8 1/2 minutes later.

Sunday's 14th stage takes riders along two big climbs in a 191-kilometer trek from Limoux to Foix.

An individual of the most difficult points on the great day is the accurate marriage ceremony photography poses to use. There will be a lot planning on and a good deal to believe that about, so to get all of us into spot at the precise time can be exhausting get the job done. More often than not guests are shy and unwilling to be in the pictures. The extra self-assured and assertive you are, (but be polite) the a great deal more at simplicity the subjects will be and the considerably better the images will be.

So how do you get the wedding images poses right? The adhering to pointers need to guidance:-

The Head, Shoulders and Body.
Most proficient photographers make confident their subjects are turned at an angle to the digicam. This creates an even more flattering and dynamic picture.

Head Tilt.
A diagonal line from one particular eye to the other makes a significantly more dynamic image and can be reached by finding the subject matter to tilt their head slightly. It truly is regular that the bride?s eyes should really be tilted towards her shoulder closest to the digicam but the grooms have to then be tilted in the direction of the furthest shoulder away from the digital camera.

Chin Peak.
Make confident the subjects chin top is not too higher or much too low too large can make an impact of haughtiness and as well small can give the impression of affordable self-esteem.

Palms.
The hand of the topic(s) really should be introduced to the camera side on, as opposed to the palm or back again of the hand in the direction of the camera, as this provides a significantly more natural and organic, flowing line. Also, guarantee the topics fingers are a little bit apart or it can make the arms seem alternatively unflattering. The wrists must be a little bent to give an a lot more calm truly feel.

Ft.
Make confident the toes of your matter(s) are not pointing specifically in direction of the digicam, or it will make them take a look brief and vast. When the issue is standing, they should certainly avert acquiring their excess weight evenly dispersed to both of those ft. With just one foot a little bit in front of the other, their excess fat should really be primarily on the back again foot and the knee of the front leg marginally bent. This will make the topic seem extra comfortable.

Total-Length and 3-Quarter Poses.
Guarantee that the bottom of the frame is at mid-thigh or mid-calf. When composing the image in the viewfinder, the edge of the body really should not minimize throughout the knee or other joint as this can make for an unsettling picture. If likely, give them a little something to do with their fingers/arms to reduce them hanging loosely by their sides. For case in point, a few should really have their arms close to every other or adult males can understandably lean on 1 knee.

Safety Tips For Making Home Improvements On Your Own

Home improvement work is something that almost every homeowner goes through sooner or later. Whether it?s an old kitchen, a boring living room or even the need for a new bathroom, every homeowner has a wish list. Continue reading for some helpful tips on how you can plan your home improvement projects to be successful.

When doing home improvements on your own, consider purchasing high quality supplies and tools. You might pay more to begin with, but it will cost less money over time. The better the quality, the longer the lifespan. Tools can cost a fortune and the last thing you want to be doing is replacing them more than is necessary.

If you want to make a room feel more tranquil, use cool, pale shades of purple, green or blue. Choose soft material such as cotton or linen to make a room more welcoming. Complete the atmosphere with potpourri and a scented candle in a prominent place in the room.

The kitchen is a great place to start a new home improvement project. Use a solution of 2-to-one TSP and water to get rid on grease stains on the walls. This will spiff them up and have them quickly ready for repainting. Painting your kitchen in a warm neutral color, like tan, will give you a great new look.

If you are running out of counter space in your kitchen, consider an over-the-range microwave. Replacing the range hood, these microwave ovens come in a wide range of prices, and some have special features such as convection cooking. This type of microwave does not have a vent. Instead, it circulates air. If you?re a cook who tends to set things on fire, this is not a good idea.

Add a coat of glaze to bathrooms to give them a vibrant look. A fresh coat of glaze will help your bathroom look new. Installing new tile in your bathroom can be a very costly proposition, but re-glazing the existing tile work may cost no more than one or two hundred dollars. This is a good way to increase your home?s value without spending very much money.

Before starting that new home improvement project, take time to consider its potential return for the money spent on the project. The best project choices are those that have a high appeal at time of resale. Not all renovations are the same thing. Find out what home improvement projects have the potential to give you the best and highest return.

Fun is an important part of any project. Although the project should be carefully and seriously undertaken, there is still room for having fun as you complete it. Mistakes are more probable if you are not enjoying your work. Think about finding a professional to do the job for you if cannot do it yourself.

If you are looking to refurnish your bedroom, it may be better to purchase freestanding furniture. You can save space with fitted dressers and cupboards, but you can?t take them if you move. Another benefit of free-standing furniture is that if you decide to change rooms or furniture, those pieces are easily moved. Likewise, if you decide to completely replace the furniture in the future, you can sell the stand-alone pieces for cash.

Carefully consider the overall style of your home when planning outdoor renovations and landscaping projects. When a garden or patio area matches the style of the rest of your home, then this brings cohesion to the whole property, where clashing styles may look unattractive or unplanned.

A signed contract for your home improvement project should ideally include both your signature and that of the contractor. You may also want to have the contract looked at by a lawyer. Beginning and end dates, guarantees, deadlines, cost and the work that will be performed should be defined.

When taping sheetrock, invest in a stainless steel taping knife. This type of knife is of high quality, it cleans up more easily and is likely to last for a longer time. You will only ever need to buy one if you choose a knife that is stainless steel. Clean it after use, and store it carefully.

This article mentioned that not knowing how to go about home improvement the right way can be costly and confusing. If there is no help from a pro, there can be one fine line between failure and success. Implement the tips given in this article on your next home improvement project.

Thwarting invaders: Predicting risks from invasive species before it happens

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? When American scientists broke the news in early 2012 that the Burmese python, a non-native species in the Florida Everglades, had eradicated up to 90 per cent of the raccoons, white-tailed deer and possums in parts of the Everglades National Park, the outcry was immediate and intense. The US Fish and Wildlife Service immediately made importing the snakes illegal, and in March 2012, it will be illegal to transport them across state lines.

Critics, however, argue that mammal declines show the damage is mostly done ? but what if you could figure out how dangerous an introduced species will be in its new environment before the damage takes place? That ability to foresee the future has mostly eluded biologists and land managers ? until now.

A coalition of researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and staff from the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre have created a unique quantitative method that enables researchers and others to assess the environmental risks posed by non-native species. While the method is tailored to the Norwegian environment, it can easily be adapted to other countries, and fills a vital need internationally for a quantifiable, uniform approach to classifying and assessing alien species, the developers say.

?This provides an objective classification of these species? potential impact on the Norwegian environment. We relied on much of the same principles as are used in the preparation of the ?Red List? of endangered and threatened species,? says Professor Bernt-Erik S?ther at NTNU?s Centre for Conservation Biology (CCB), who has spearheaded the development of the new methodology with the help of a coalition of other Norwegian scientists and Biodiversity Information Centre staff.

The method classifies species according to their reproductive ability, growth rate, individual densities, population densi?ties, prevalence and their effect. This information allows the researchers to plot the risks posed by each species on two axes, one of which shows the likelihood of the species? dispersal and ability to establish itself in the environment (along with its rate of establishment, if applicable) while the other shows the degree to which the alien species will affect native species and habitats.

Based on the combined values of the two axes, the species can be placed in one of five risk categories, from very high risk, to species with no known risk factors. While the classification scheme is now only in Norwegian, plans calls for translating it into English, with the hopes that it can provide a useful international approach to assessing risks from alien species.

Execution of Afghan woman occurred under Western noses

Parwan Province, home of NATO's massive Bagram Air Field, had been thought secure. This weekend, it hosted a Taliban-style public execution of a woman for adultery.

Part of what is so shocking about the public execution of an Afghan?woman for alleged adultery is where it took place.

The close-up shooting took place in Parwan Province before a crowd of?150 onlookers who cheered the killers as ?mujahideen? as the woman was?shot nine times. The Afghan government says the incident, captured on?video, was the work of the Taliban; a Taliban spokesman denies this.

Parwan Province lies just north of the capital Kabul and houses Bagram?Air Field, a massive US base. This incident took place directly under?the noses of the Afghan government and the international community.

Since the Taliban?s ouster in 2001, the province has always been the?most obvious place for foreigners?looking?to work or relax?outside Kabul. It?s one of the safest places in the country, with the?large security footprint, good connectivity to the capital, and the?mostly-Tajik ethnic makeup.

I have made the journey a half dozen times since 2005. There?s a?lovely ice cream shop off one of the rotaries, and a decent restaurant?serving fish and kebabs overlooking the Panjshir River.

The province has received a lot of development assistance, both by?nongovernmental organizations based out of nearby Kabul and from the?military Provincial Reconstruction Team operating out of Bagram.

A local elder in Parwan once told me how the foreigners had now built?three girls? schools within a mile of each other. Girls schools are a?popular project for foreigners, and Parwan is a popular place to put?them, given the relative security, but there weren?t enough girls in?the area to fill three, the elder claimed. Instead, the security guard?at one of the schools did nothing but protect the squirrels and birds?who nested in the empty building.

So if there?s any place where the international community might expect?to wield influence and blunt the rougher edges of village life, Parwan?would be it.

But the execution follows a number of disturbing events in Parwan that suggest slipping Western influence.

  • When news emerged that US soldiers had inadvertently burned some?Qurans at Bagram, a member of Parliament from Parwan named Abdul?Sattar Khawasi declared that ?jihad against Americans is an?obligation.?
  • More than 80 schoolgirls were hospitalized in 2009 after feeling ill?and reporting a strange odor in their classroom. The Afghan government?has claimed these incidents are Taliban poisonings, but a recent World?Health Organization investigation concluded these periodic incidents?are ?mass hysteria? not uncommon in conflict zones.
  • The Long War Journal website notes that the security situation has?grown ?especially perilous? since last year. NATO turned over security?responsibilities for the province to the Afghans in December of 2011.

Parwan presents a problem for those who argue that foreign militaries need to stay to hold the country together and protect its women. As regional expert Christine Fair told CNN in the wake of the execution, ?We can ask the question what will happen when we leave, but let?s remember that this is actually happening while we?re still there.?

Myla Sinanaj Confirms: I'm Not Knocked Up!

Myla Sinanaj has made it as clear as she can: the ex-girlfriend of Kris Humphries is NOT pregnant after all.

Following days' worth of rumors, the total nut job NYC hotel employee Tweeted a photo of herself on Monday without a baby bump.

She then followed that evidence up with an even more straightforward quote to AllWestEverything.com, writing to that site: I'm not pregnant.

Myla Sinanaj Photograph

In her first public comments since becoming a certified Z-lister, Sinanaj added that she is NOT signing any non-disclosure agreements, but she also will NOT be speaking out about Humphries' divorce from Kim Kardashian.

Nor is she suing Kris for comments he made about her running a brothel out of her hotel room.

"I dropped my law suit because after things got out of hand me and kris realized our friendship was bigger than the BS I never cared," Myla writes, adding: "Smh I’m portrayed as a crazy gold digger booty call and he’s a bad guy...

"... he’s a GOOD guy and so many people don’t know that because he’s so negatively portrayed but I knw who he is and that’s why I trust him and dropped everything with no settlement."

Well, we're sold. These two are clearly meant for each other.

MBA Application Advice: the Essay ? Opus Magnum

By Dan Jackson, MBA ?12

Why you have decided to pursue an MBA is one of the most common (and usually the first) question of the essay section within an MBA application. The main objective of this question seeks to understand an applicants? reasoning behind his/her pursuit of a higher level business education, more importantly the question is aimed at getting candidates to show the MBA admissions committee that the program is the right fit at the right time.

MBA.com highlights a trend, and one primary reason that recent business graduates decided to pursue an MBA: a desire?not only for a high-quality business education that will help them get to the next level within their careers, but also?an opportunity to give back to the community through corporate social responsibility (CSR).??Now CSR can mean a lot different things to different people, but for the purpose of this post, I refer to it as the desire to give back to the community.

MBA.com?summarizes a few key points from the 2010 Global Management Education Graduate Survey, in which recent MBA graduates ?indicated that emphasis on community and inclusion was of great importance [when pursuing an MBA degree].?? This commitment to the community is not only true for business students, but also is what B-school programs are looking for in their candidates.?MBA programs today are not looking for the next top richest business students, but instead want students who are passionate about giving back in a variety of different ways.?

This reason for pursuing an MBA?got me thinking about the various ways to address this first question when completing an application for MBA admission.? I?ll try to provide a bit of advice based on my experience working in the University of St. Thomas MBA admissions office.?

Before answering this question, take some time to ensure that you have thoroughly thought about the reason(s) that you are pursuing an MBA degree.?

Don?t use short and simple responses, such as ?I want to increase my net worth or I want to be able to make more money, negotiate a higher salary on my next job offer or to be the next big Wall Street tycoon.?? While these are worthy endeavors and can be added benefits of the MBA degree, these types of responses will not make you as a candidate look favorable to the admissions committee, and the committee will most likely not take you seriously.

Do find a way to combine and incorporate your background passion or experience along with the knowledge that will be gained in an MBA program.? Identifying a passion/experience and relating that to how the program will help you advance your passion will allow the committee to see that you have thought not only about the strengths of the program, but how the program can help you achieve your goals.? Students in MBA programs come from very diverse backgrounds.? Within the Full-time UST MBA program, about 50-60% of the incoming class every year does not have a background in business, so many of these students will use a current or previous experience to show how an MBA can enhance a particular area of their professional career.? Many of these applicants demonstrate that an MBA will allow them to give back to their community or contribute a social benefit to society in some capacity.

Now your entire response to this question does not have to focus on big ideas that will change the world, and it is still possible to include within your essay that you are interested in becoming a senior financial analyst, investment banker or marketing analyst (these are very logical transitions from an MBA), but keep in mind that many schools want to see students who will be able to apply their MBA skills in a variety of areas inside and outside the business world.? Try to focus on the big picture and think of how obtaining a higher education will not only add value to you as an individual, but will also add value to the community and those that surround you.
