Dutch fire nine past Britain to reach final

The Netherlands crushed Great Britain 9-2 on Thursday to reach the men's hockey final where they will tackle defending champions Germany for the gold medal.

The Dutch, who last took the title in 2000, overwhelmed Britain who struggled to contain the pace and unpredictable movement of Rogier Hofman, Billy Bakker and Valentin Verga.

By half-time the Dutch already had a firm grip with a 4-1 lead.

Two Roderick Weusthof goals put them two up inside a quarter of an hour, the second of them after fans had cheered a Dutch failure to score from a penalty corner, only for the ball to be played straight back into the danger zone.

Although the prolific Ashley Jackson pulled one back, the home crowd were soon quietened by goals from Mink van der Weerden and by Bakker.

Bakker scored twice more after half-time, and both Floris Evers and the 36-year-old Teun de Nooijers, who was a member of both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic gold medal winning squads, got on the scoresheet before Weusthof too completed his hat-trick.

By now the chants of Rule Britannia had begun to sound a little hollow, but there was some slight consolation for the home nation with a late goal by Rob Moore.

"It is difficult for me because my head is somewhere else now, and I am very happy and proud. We promised to come and play our game, which is to attack, and we did," said Evers.

"We knew the first 10 minutes of the second half would be important, and when they didn't score then, we knew it was going to be our day."

England coach Jason Lee said he was embarrassed by the loss.

"At 4-1 at half time it was our intention to try to get back in it, and that's what opened it up for them. We got a bit reckless too early and lost the basics and couldn't get them back," he said.

Earlier Germany had shown their mettle by making a great late comeback to overcome the top-seeded world champions Australia by 4-2.

It happened after Germany were denied an apparently brilliant equaliser, for dangerous play.

Oliver Korn's perceptive lofted pass was deftly controlled mid-air by Oskar Deecke and with a little aerial juggling, he nudged over the goalkeeper.

But it was disallowed, even though four Germans implored the referee to change his mind.

"The rules are changing all the time. Soon enough that will be a goal," said Australian coach Ric Charlesworth.

"It was very clever and a good move, but maybe the right decision. Unfortunately they don't know what to do with the overhead."

It seemed to give the Germans an adrenaline surge and very soon Tobias Hauke split the Australian defence with a diagonal ball from the left, putting in Matthias Witthaus to equalise, and quite quickly the Germans had a two-goal lead.

First they stopped play to ask for a video review which showed an Australian foot touching the ball inside the penalty area. The resulting penalty corner brought a goal from Timo Wess.

Then, with the Australians pressing hard to save the match, Florian Fuchs broke away to make a place in the final safe with a fourth goal.

"It was the kind of passionate game you need in a semi-final. It was a great match," said German coach Markus Weise.

Kieran Govers had put Australia 1-0 up but within three minutes Witthaus won a penalty corner from which Moritz Furste equalised.

Ten minutes into the second half, Australia had the lead again when the Germans got into a defensive muddle, and Glenn Turner thwacked the ball in from only a few feet.

The world champions seemed to be heading for triumph at that stage, until the match turned dramatically on its head.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL coming to Germany and Austria with LTE in tow

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL

Our thoughts on the Transformer Pad TF300 were mostly positive when we reviewed it back in April. A lot has happened since then and, while its unlikely to still be at the top of our 10-inch heap, a helping of LTE will go a long way towards keeping it relevant. The TF300TL (as the 4G variant is called) sneaked through the FCC in late May, but we're only now getting word about availability. According to a German press release snagged by TechFokus, the slate should be available in mid August for €629 ($776) with keyboard dock or €529 ($653) without. Sadly, there's still no word on availability outside of German and Austria, but if you're on O2 in one of those nations you should be able to pick up the tablet soon and enjoy its embarrassment of 4G riches.

New gene linked to PTSD identified

ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2012) ? Investigators at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and Veterans Affairs (VA) Boston Healthcare System have identified a new gene linked to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The findings, published online in Molecular Psychiatry, indicate that a gene known to play a role in protecting brain cells from the damaging effects of stress may also be involved in the development of PTSD.

The article reports the first positive results of a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of PTSD and suggests that variations in the retinoid-related orphan receptor alpha (RORA) gene are linked to the development of PTSD.

Mark W. Miller, PhD, associate professor at BUSM and a clinical research psychologist in the National Center for PTSD at VA Boston Healthcare System was the study's principal investigator. Mark Logue, PhD, research assistant professor at BUSM and Boston University School of Public Health and Clinton Baldwin, PhD, professor at BUSM, were co-first authors of the paper.

PTSD is a psychiatric disorder defined by serious changes in cognitive, emotional, behavioral and psychological functioning that can occur in response to a psychologically traumatic event. Previous studies have estimated that approximately eight percent of the U.S. population will develop PTSD in their lifetime. That number is significantly greater among combat veterans where as many as one out of five suffer symptoms of the disorder.

Previous GWAS studies have linked the RORA gene to other psychiatric conditions, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, autism and depression.

"Like PTSD, all of these conditions have been linked to alterations in brain functioning, so it is particularly interesting that one of the primary functions of RORA is to protect brain cells from the damaging effects of oxidative stress, hypoxia and inflammation," said Miller.

Participants in the study were approximately 500 male and female veterans and their intimate partners, all of whom had experienced trauma and approximately half of whom had PTSD. The majority of the veterans had been exposed to trauma related to their military experience whereas their intimate partners had experienced trauma related to other experiences, such as sexual or physical assault, serious accidents, or the sudden death of a loved one. Each participant was interviewed by a trained clinician, and DNA was extracted from samples of their blood.

The DNA analysis examined approximately 1.5 million genetic markers for signs of association with PTSD and revealed a highly significant association with a variant (rs8042149) in the RORA gene. The researchers then looked for evidence of replication using data from the Detroit Neighborhood Health Study where they also found a significant, though weaker, association between RORA and PTSD.

"These results suggest that individuals with the RORA risk variant are more likely to develop PTSD following trauma exposure and point to a new avenue for research on how the brain responds to trauma," said Miller.

This study was supported by the National Institute on Mental Health of the National Institutes of Health under award number R01 MH079806 and a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Attorney: Ohio moviegoer had gun for protection

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? A northeast Ohio man brought a gun, ammunition and several knives to a showing of the latest Batman movie because he wanted to protect himself in case someone tried to replicate last month's deadly Colorado theater shooting, his attorney said Tuesday.

Scott A. Smith, 37, had no intention of causing harm or inducing panic when he brought the weapons to a Saturday showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," said his attorney, Matthew Bruce.

"With the recent shooting in Colorado, and the other incidents around the country in regards to threats, he felt that he needed protection," Bruce said.

Bruce said he was referring to movie theater threats made after the deadly July 20 shooting in Aurora, Colo., where a 24-year-old man is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 at a midnight showing of the same movie.

Bruce said his client "felt a sense of fear" about going to a theater, and chose the Batman movie by complete coincidence.

"Any weapons he may have had on him were solely for protection," he said.

Smith brought the weapons to a Regal Cinemas theater in Westlake, just outside of Cleveland, and seated himself in the middle of the theater's back row a half hour before the movie started, police said.

A theater manager and an off-duty police officer working security stopped Smith after they became suspicious of a bag he was carrying, said Westlake Police Lt. Ray Arcuri.

"Why pick that movie? Why that theater? Why sit in the back all the way like that? Why bring the gun?" he said. "There's several unanswered questions."

Smith was arrested without incident and is currently jailed. Bruce said his client has been cooperative with officials.

He was expected to be indicted on several weapons charges, but it's still too early to determine what those charges will be, said Nicole DiSanto of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's office.

Arcuri said one of the charges police may pursue for Smith is having weapons under disability. He said Smith was taking daily medication, but he would not elaborate on what that medication is.

"Our contention is that he's drug dependent," he said. "And as a result, he should not be possessing a firearm."

The theater manager first noticed Smith and a beige bag he carried over his shoulder, Arcuri said. When approached, Smith told the manager it had medical supplies inside. He then showed the manager a portion of the bag that didn't reveal the weapons.

The off-duty Westlake police officer also noticed Smith and his bag. After checking with the manager, the officer followed Smith into the empty theater.

The officer said Smith consented to a search inside the theater. Arcuri said the officer was more familiar with the bag, and he knew where to look when he found a loaded 9 mm Glock pistol with two extra loaded magazines, Arcuri said. The officer also found three knives in the bag and another knife on Smith, he said. There were also medical supplies, but Arcuri would not elaborate on what they were.

When the officer asked Smith why he brought the weapons into the theater, Smith offered to put them in his car.

Arcuri applauded the off-duty officer for trusting his instincts and pursuing Smith.

"For an officer to observe that, take the initiative, approach him," he said. "Basically, avert a tragedy if he pulls a pistol out and starts shooting."

Police searched Smith's North Ridgeville home Monday night and found more weapons, including at least six pistols and several shotguns and rifles, and thousands of rounds of ammunition. They also found more than one bulletproof vest.

Little information is available about Smith. He is married with an infant daughter, Arcuri said. His wife told police her husband was a sleep technician for some sort of medical research, but Arcuri could not elaborate.

Smith also served a brief time in the U.S. Army. He enlisted in January 1995 and reported to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri for basic training that month. He was discharged a month later, according to the Army, which did not disclose why.

Smith had no previous criminal record, Arcuri said. He said Smith did not have a concealed carry permit and should not have brought any weapon to the theater.

"Our job is to protect the community," he said of police. "It's not his role. If there's a gun, it's because our officers brought it. It's not his job to bring the gun, it's ours."

Clinical trial targets breast cancer cells by injecting trastuzumab ...

In two to five percent of women with breast cancer, tumor cells migrate into the spinal fluid invading the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord called the meninges. While a rare complication, the condition is challenging because there is no agreed-upon standard of treatment, leaving little hope for patients affected. Northwestern Medicine- researchers are currently examining a novel approach to delivering an FDA approved drug that they hope will advance research for this type of cancer and lead to discoveries that may improve outcomes in the future.

As part of the clinical trial, the drug Trastuzumab is directly injected into the spinal fluid in hopes of stopping the growth of the cancer cells in patients with HER-2 positive breast cancer. Jeffrey Raizer, MD, co-director of the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute (NBTI), is the principal investigator for trial which he developed. NBTI is part of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

?When cancer spreads to the spinal fluid and tissues surrounding the brain, called leptomeningeal metastases (LM), there are very limited therapeutic options,? said Raizer, who is also medical director of neuro-oncology at Northwestern Memorial and associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. ?This rare condition typically occurs in later stages of cancer and often the benefits of treatment are small and may be counteracted by its side effects. For women with HER-2 positive breast cancer, they often have well-controlled disease in their body when this complication occurs.?

Raizer explains that drugs cannot easily penetrate from the blood stream into the spinal fluid because of the blood brain barrier, making the condition difficult to treat. In this trial, the antibody will be delivered directly into the spinal fluid using a device that is placed under the scalp called an Ommaya reservoir. A small catheter is inserted into a fluid-filled space allowing fluid to be removed and for the drug to be instilled into it.

(AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad made his first appearance on state TV in nearly three weeks Tuesday in a show of solidarity with a senior Iranian envoy even as the U.S. secretary of state urged stepped up international planning for the regime's collapse.

The contrasts couldn't have been more vivid: Assad and Iran's Saeed Jalili vowing to defeat the rebels and their backers, while Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton predicted Assad's regime was quickly unraveling, with high-level defections such as his prime minister's switch to the rebel side.

It also highlighted Assad's deepening reliance on a shrinking list of allies, led by Tehran. Assad ? seen on state TV for the first time since a July 18 bombing in Damascus killed four of his top security officials ? used Jalili's visit to portray a sense of command and vowed to fight his opponents "relentlessly."

Jalili, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, promised Iran would stand by Syria against its international "enemies" ? a clear reference to the rebels' Western backers and others such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

While there were no public pledges of greater military assistance to Assad, the mission by Jalili appeared to reflect Iran's efforts to reassure Syria of its backing and ease speculation that Tehran also could be making contingencies for Assad's possible fall.

On a visit to South Africa, Clinton described Assad's regime as splintering from Monday's defection of Syria's prime minister, Riad Hijab, and other military and political figures breaking away in recent months. She urged international leaders to begin work on a "good transition plan" to try to keep Syria from collapsing into more chaos after Assad.

"I am not going to put a timeline on it. I can't possibly predict it, but I know it's going to happen as do most observers around the world," Clinton told reporters.

A post-Assad Syria presents a host of worrisome scenarios, including a bloody cycle of revenge and power grabs by the country's patchwork of factions. They include the Sunni-led rebels and Assad's minority Alawite community, an offshoot of Shiite Islam and part of its close bonds with Shiite power Iran.

A growing humanitarian crisis is already taking hold.

More than 1,300 Syrians fled to Turkey on Tuesday as rebels tried to expand their hold inside Aleppo, Syria's largest city, despite two weeks of withering counterattacks by Assad's troops. Close to 48,000 Syrians have already taken refuge in Turkey, which has served as a staging ground for rebels. Even more refugees have crossed into Jordan and Lebanon.

And at least 22,300 Iraqis who fled to Syria several years ago have streamed home in the past three weeks, said U.N. officials in Baghdad as they prepared for more refugees.

In Geneva, meanwhile, the World Health Organization said the fighting has severely hit Syria's health services, including closing down 90 percent of pharmaceutical plants in Damascus and other main cities and leaving critical shortages of medicine. WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic cited a Syrian Health Ministry report that 200 ambulances were lost in recent weeks to theft or clashes.

Aleppo-based activists said clashes were going on Tuesday near the historic city center. That suggested the rebels were making some inroads in Aleppo, which lies some 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the Turkish border.

Intense government bombardment of the Syrian town of Tal Rafaat closer to the border sent scores of people spilling into Turkey for safety, according to the activists.

A Turkish government official said 1,328 Syrian refugees had crossed the border Tuesday ? nearly double the number of the previous day. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

Ahmad Saleh, a Tal Rifaat resident who fled to Turkey, said the town was shelled Monday from the nearby air base of Minnegh, killing at least two people. "We had to choose between dying in Syria and coming to Turkey," he said.

A video posted online by activists Tuesday showed a large group of Free Syrian Army rebels in military fatigues and carrying rocket-propelled grenades and automatic rifles. The fighters were seen announcing that they were joining the "Unification Brigade," the main group of rebels in Aleppo, to assist in the "liberation" of the city.

"They have Satan on their side, we have God on ours," one rebel shouted. "We are coming, Aleppo," shouted another. The authenticity of the video could not be independently verified.

Despite a ferocious crackdown, rebels in Syria have grown more confident and are using increasingly bolder tactics both in Aleppo and in the capital, Damascus.

In a daylight attack, rebels on Saturday abducted a group of 48 Iranians near Damascus, branding them as spies assisting in Assad's crackdown.

Iran says those captured when their bus was commandeered were pilgrims visiting a Shiite shrine on the outskirts of Damascus, and Jalili said Tuesday that Iran would spare no effort to secure their release.

"We believe that the abduction of innocent people could not be accepted by any rational person. We believe that the parties that support those terrorist groups to commit such disgraceful acts, are their partners," he said.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry said it holds the U.S. responsible for the fate of the abducted Iranians.

Iran's state IRNA news agency said the ministry summoned the Swiss envoy in Tehran late Monday to stress that Iran expects Washington to use its influence to secure the Iranians' release. The Swiss look after U.S. interests in Iran since Tehran and Washington have no diplomatic relations.

The Iranian Embassy in Turkey said Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi was traveling Tuesday to Turkey, where he was to meet with his Turkish counterpart to discuss Syria and the abducted Iranians.

Syrian rebels claimed three of the Iranian captives were killed on Monday during shelling by government forces in Damascus and its suburbs, and threatened to kill the remaining Iranians unless the army stopped its bombardment.

"The Syrian regime is responsible for anything that happens to the Iranians," a representative of the Baraa Brigades, which claimed responsibility for the group's abduction, told The Associated Press on Skype.

The representative's claim that three were killed could not be independently verified. An official at the Iranian Embassy in Damascus said he had no information on the subject.

Israeli troops wound man near Syrian Golan fence

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli troops shot across the ceasefire line with Syria on the occupied Golan Heights to wound a man suspected of planning to tamper with the boundary fence on Saturday, the military said.

The Golan, which Israel captured from Syria in a 1967 war and later annexed, has been largely untouched by the 17-month-old uprising rocking Damascus. But Israel has been on guard for hostilities or refugee influxes on the strategic plateau.

Troops in the southern Golan spotted a man approaching the fence with wire-cutters and he did not heed warnings to back off, nor warning shots fired in the air, Lieutenant-Colonel Avital Leibovich, an Israeli military spokeswoman, said.

He was shot in the knee and taken away by three other people, Leibovich said.

"We call this an infiltration attempt ... a breach of the border which we cannot allow," she told reporters, saying there had been several other such incidents on the Golan recently.

Asked if the man shot on Saturday might have been seeking asylum in Israeli-held territory, Leibovich was dismissive.

"Someone who comes with cutters is not, I believe, innocent," she said, adding that it was possible the man was testing Israel's defenses.

Israel's military chief, Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz, said in January preparations were under way on the Golan for a flood of refugees from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's minority Alawite sect, should he be toppled.

In May last year, Israeli troops opened fire on protesters from Syria, among them Palestinian refugees, who surged across the fortified boundary fence.

At least 23 people were killed in the incident, which Israel accused Assad of orchestrating in a bid to divert international scrutiny from his crackdown on the Syrian uprising.

Visualized Sandia Labs' Z machine erupts in a web of EMP lightning

Sandia National Laboratories' Z machine sounds like it belongs in a James Bond movie more than it does an Alberquerque research facility. Based on what it can do, that's not as far-fetched as it seems. What you see isn't the handiwork of some electric spider -- it's what you witness in the immediate fraction of a second after the Z's electromagnetic pulse kicks in and forks of lightning burst across the 108-foot distance inside. The pulse in question is key to Sandia's studies of fusion and the effect of very intense magnetic pressures on materials that normally refuse to change states. Even in 2006, the Z was putting out pressure more than 10 million times that of the atmosphere, and it successfully melted diamond at roughly half that strength. It goes without saying that we don't want to be anywhere near this kind of energy when scientists flick the switch, but we're glad to see that something so pretty and deadly can help us understand physics.

Securing the Village ? ISSA International Conference ? Anaheim, CA ? October 23-24, 2012

2012 ISSA International Conference: New opportunities abound in the midst of amazing transformations in technology, business, and culture. Inspired by Disney?s innovative vision, the cybersecurity community will gather at the Magic Kingdom on October 25-26 to look at change as a chance to achieve excellence. Disruptions like ?big data?, ?cloud computing?, massive collaboration, and business transformation make it possible for us to blaze new trails and build effective foundations. We are enabling our work forces to be mobile and productive while protecting sensitive data. We build systems and policies that impede our foes and guard our constituents. This is an exciting time to be in the information security field and we are all vital in making our businesses faster, better, smarter and, most importantly, safer.

Cyber Security Management & Leadership

How Much Should We Worry About Cyber Security?: Internet crime is increasing in frequency and severity. What can be done to protect individuals, businesses, and governments? With the advent of cloud computing and the growth of connectivity among institutions, companies, and individuals, electronic security has never been a more visible and urgent issue. Special Issue. Creative Leadership: Democracy: If you want to be a leader in your organization and you?re not one now, what are you doing about it? Maybe you?re toiling away hoping your boss will see your leadership potential, or you?re certain the higher-ups might have sensed your interest in leadership in the myriad of memos or reports you?ve carefully written and submitted. Call it your stealth leadership campaign. Forbes, July 12, 2012

To be a Kings fan is to live with a lifetime of frustration, a lot of hope, and not much else. RSJ Swenson.

Email-Based Malware Attacks, July 2012: Last month?s post examining the top email-based malware attacks received so much attention and provocative feedback that I thought it was worth revisiting. Dr. Wahls' Amazing Story! | Ozark Natural Foods

Dr. Terry Wahls, MD, is a nutritionist, fitness enthusiast, and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. So she was understandably shocked in 2000 to be diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a progressively debilitating disease that attacks the body?s central nervous system. She was healthy, athletic, and in the prime of her life. Of all people, how could she be diagnosed with such a disease?

Across the next seven years, her health slowly deteriorated, eventually confining her to a specialized wheelchair where she lived, ate, and slept.

Fearful of becoming permanently bedridden ? and of losing her job ? Dr. Wahls explored many options for curing herself of MS, including pharmaceutical drugs, vitamins, and chemotherapy. Nothing slowed the painful advance of MS. The situation seemed hopeless.

Desperate for results, in late 2007 she had what she called her ?epiphany.? What if, she thought, I could cure myself from the inside out? Her research led her to create the Wahls Diet, which consists only of natural, high nutrient, unprocessed foods.

The results were remarkable. Within a year of starting the diet, Dr. Wahls was able to resume walking comfortably around the hospital on her rounds without any assistance, and even ride her bike to work every day. Doctors who had known her for the past seven years were incredulous.

It is true that fresh, all-natural meat and produce is often more expensive than mass-produced food. But as Dr. Wahls? story shows, saving a few dollars by purchasing junk food can have much more expensive effects in the long run. Either you can pay a little bit more now, she says ? or you might pay a lot more in the future.

Dr. Wahls recently told her inspiring story, which she calls ?Eating for your Mitochondria,? in a TED Talk. You can watch it here.

Your diet is an investment in your future. Invest wisely. Visit Ozark Natural Foods for fresh, nutritious, affordable products that will change your life for the better!

How to Follow the Apple v. Samsung Patent Trial ? Mass Law Blog

by Lee Gesmer on August 2, 2012

The Internet has made following trials in real time feasible, more or less. ?For the press to cover controversial trials is nothing new, but in the past these were mostly criminal cases. ?Today, thanks to sites like groklaw.net, people can follow technology industry cases in detail ? descriptions of what is going on in the courtroom, documents and (in the case of groklaw), unsparing commentary.

Groklaw is following Apple v. Samsung from a distance (at least compared to its recent coverage of Oracle v. Google), and the traditional press appears to be covering the case heavily, but only at a general level of detail. ?However, someone has put together a twitter feed consolidating the tweets of several industry reporters. ?It?s almost like a shadow jury, but a jury of people more knowledgeable about the companies involved than the average juror. ?And, in some cases, openly opinionated.

The lawyers involved in this case, and certainly in any case covered in detail by groklaw, must dread the possibility that jurors are reading these materials.

The twitter feed is here.
